Nickole Evans 2000- 2001 Volunteer Activities

Spring 2001:  Over Spring Break I will be going to Indiana with the All Bands Festival. Only 17 bands from the United States received an invitation to participate. What a way to spend my break.  I won the local Violet Richardson Award from the Soroptomists, and won the 3rd place essay contest from the Optimist. The funds for these are going to Band and France Trip next year. I continue to work as Homework Helper after school, and am already applying for jobs this summer in between conferences in New York and Minneapolis. I also won the Nestlé's Very Best In Youth, where my family and I will go to Los Angeles for the celebration.  I received a grant from the Eli Wiesel Foundation to recycle computers to low income families this summer. This will also be my Gold Award for Girl Scouts, if they approve it. Oh, I forgot to tell you, that at one of my Church Youth Group meetings, my friend and leader, (almost twice my size)  began to chock. She couldn't get up the food,  nor could she breath, she turned blue. None of the others were responding. She was standing, so I got up, put my arms around her from the back, I lifted her off the floor four times using the Heimlich maneuver, until she spit out the food.  All I can say is thank God, she's al right.

After organizing the SAVE 2001 retreat I was able to go Snow Boarding for the first time. I spent most of the time on my bottom, I'll take pads next time. February 6, 2001the Brownies and I will present our 60 Homework Packets for Migrant Worker Families to Amistad Elementary School.  I have a couple of Band trips to Spokane and to Indiana that I will be participating in.

Fall 2000: School starts end of August. My day starts out with Jazz Band at 6:30 AM, followed with French 3/4, Biology, English 3/4, US History, Concert Band ending at 2:10. I then have Marching Band on Monday, Tuesdays and Fridays from 6:00-9:00. Since I hadn't started as a homework helper yet I took up JV Soccer this year.  I practice each day form 3-5 and games are on Saturdays. I completed my application for American Foreign Service for January of 2002 and beginning to look at fund raising events and activities to finance the 6 month trip. I am looking for another job, hopefully at the local library for 15 hours a week, to start when Band and Soccer are done.  I will continue to work with my Brownie Girl Scout troop and develop a Girl Scout Gold Award Project.

Summer 2000: Starting June 8 with working for the Salvation Army as a Camp Counselor in Richland and starting my Driver's Education class. No rest for the weary, except we did get a chance to take a week and go to Victoria and Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. I plan to put in my application to become an American Foreign Exchange student in France January 2002, and start and complete my Gold Award for Girl Scouts this year. On top of this I continue to be a member of the Youth Volunteer Center Council and volunteer and I have just become a GS Leader In Training for a small group of Brownies that I love.
