| SPRING 2000: Our
Kennewick Lady Lions Basketball State Playoffs for 4
days in Tacoma in March and I got to go as a member of
the Pep Band. Our Pep Band received the Good Sportsman
Award for the event. March 30-April 2, I was
selected, quite an honor to attend a Girl Scout
Leadership Conferance in New York. My project for
National Youth Service Day April 14 and 15 included
updated the Volunteer Youth Web Page and sending out
flyers to all youth and agencies that were interested in
volunteering. SERVEnet made me a local SERVEnet
Ambassador posting volunteer job listings on their web
page. And if this wasn't
enough both my brother and I were selected as Millennium
Dreamers Ambassadors where we get to go to Disney World
from May 8-11 with our parents for our volunteer work. |

| FALL 1999: My
normal schedule involves 4 solid classes and 3 Band
classes. I got a job with the Salvation Army
working as a Homework Helper at Amistad Elementary
School Monday-Thursday 3-4:30. My marching band
practices Monday and Tuesday nights from 6-9p.m. My
first class starts at 6:30 a.m. Every weekend in October
I was participating in Band, the Calvacade here in
Kennewick, Band Contests in Vancouver and in Pocatello.
October I found out that I was elected Freshman class
President. In-between all of this I received the Larger
than Life award and was able to meet the Backstreet
Boys. In November I went to Dayton, Ohio and New York
New York for the Global Youth Peace and Tolerance Award.
See my web page for the photos, stories, and
impressions. December I had the honor to go to Seattle
and meet Nelson Mandela. |

| Summer of 1999: This
summer I got my first paying job. I worked for the Arc
of the Tri-Cities as a camp assistant helping children
with developmental disabilities have a rewarding summer.
I was assigned the Richland camp which required me to
take the bus with two changes taking 1 hour to get the
camp and 1 hour to get back home. I had
volunteered the year before for the Arc and love working
with children. I was able to save my money to help
me through out my first year at Kennewick High School.
I also was selected to become a Mediator, one of four
teens in the Tri-Cities to help develop programs in the
schools. I spent over 40 hours in training and received
my training certificate. By January I hope to be
fully certified. Another project was to work
with the Volunteer Center Youth Program Council to
develop projects for youth to volunteer this summer.
In between my work, classes I was able to set up
four events, recruit volunteers and successfully
complete the projects. I also attend my first BAND
camp, living at the High School for the whole week. What
fun, but my feet sure hurt. I was asked to participate
in the "It Could Happen Here Conference" for
the Contact HelpLine conference. I presented my
feelings on violence and what we can do as Youth to help
Stop the
Violence. |
