My Girl Scout Experience
From Daisy to Senior
1990-2003 13 years

I have a belief that "If I can do it, so can you."  I'm not the smartest girl in the world, nor am I the most talented. What I have is a heart and I truly care about people.  When I started my GS Silver Award project, my  first web page "Youth Speak Out" in 1998 when I was only 13, I had no idea the impact. All I knew is that girls needed to have a voice and an opportunity to speak out.  They also needed some examples that they could duplicate of how to make this world a better place to live.
Girl Scouts has provided me the tools to succeed. My Gold Award project "Computers 4 Girls" provided  tools (computers) to low income girls in my community in order for them to succeed. Tools and computers are not enough to make girls succeed.  With out encouragement, inspiration, and showing the girls that they too can make a difference, the computers and tools are useless.
Some High School Girl Scouts helped show me the value of the computer when I was only 13. We designed the HS Youth Volunteer on-line Center.  By the time I was 15 I realized that my job as a role model was critical for those girls younger than me. Over the last 3 years  I have continually worked with younger girls to help them succeed in and out side of Girl Scouts. Many of the girls that have received the "Computers 4 Girls" have returned for additional training and encouragement. With this one on one encouragement this project encourages and inspires low income and ethnically diverse girls to succeed. And succeed they do, they get better grades, they speak up, and they learn to dream and go after their dreams.

Should you wish to duplicate the "Computers 4 Girls" project, please do so. But remember it is the hands on encouragement and attention that will really make the real difference.

HOW TO INSPIRE GIRLS TO USE A COMPUTER!

My favorite web site is the National Girl Scout web page Just for Girls. This web page has continually inspired me to do more and to continue to put my volunteer work on the web for other girls to become inspired.
I have received numerous awards for my activities and promoting them on the world wide web. It's not the awards that keep me going, it's seeing the smile on the girls faces saying "I want to be just like you." It's the same smile I had when I saw "Nelson Mandela" and Elie Wiesel,  I want to be just like them, a peacemaker.
