Packets for Children of Migrant Worker Families Nickole Evans, Senior Girl Scout attended and has worked as a homework helper at Amistad Elementary School, Kennewick, where 70% are on free and reduced lunches, 60% of the children have English as a Second Language. And a recorded 40% turnover of student is due to many of the children being from Migrant Worker Families. Amistad has been unable to meet it's reading and writing goals for all of their children. In order to help children on the go, Nickole went to Mrs. Jean Bowman, Counselor of Amistad and asked how can I help? Mrs. Bowman said one way the Girl Scouts could help is by putting together On the Go homework packets. Mrs. Bowman provided a list of possible supplies and age appropriate homework. Nickole Evans is also Senior Girl Scout and completing her "Leadership In Training" with Brownie Troop 143. Her Brownie Troop 143 wanted to help Nickole in anyway possible, so they jointed the project. Nickole collected the supplies from the Volunteer Center, Salvation Army, Washington State University Extension, Reading Foundation , RECA Foundation and funds for supplies from the Community Unitarian Universalist Church, Kiwanis and private individuals. Nickole's 10 year old brother helped in this project by donating money for supplies, organizing donated supplies, assisting with production of multiplication tables, and stuffing the packets. The packet supplies is valued at $10.00 each. Together they were able to supply 60 homework packets, 10 per grade level.See my Leadership In Training Program with my favorite Brownies. |
