June 12, 2006 - Linda Woiwod,
Dean, Student Services, Skagit Valley College, Mt. Vernon, WA
Nickole Evans impresses me very much. I have been active with students in
higher education in Washington State, USA for the past 25 years. I
have met and enjoyed many students in my career, however I have
never been as impressed with a student as I am with Nickole Evans.
Nickole is outgoing, friendly, and can engage what seems to be
disparate opinions into a productive community dialog. She promotes
collaboration and teamwork. Thanks to Nickole’s leadership, Skagit
Valley College was one of the first community colleges in the nation
to reach out to students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Her work to
raise funds for evacuated students who came to Skagit County, grew
into a project adopted by a local senior high school class. They
made it their goal their final year together to help one of our
Katrina families find housing, furnish that house, and find work for
the college student’s spouse. Nickole in this case, besides leading
a charge that saved the lives of a young family, has modeled for
high school seniors how to make a difference when joining together.
Nickole’s resume and biography contains events and projects that
would be impressive in the resume of someone who has spent twice as
much time as she on the planet! An international traveler, a
constant consumer of experience, Nickole allows very few
world-improvement opportunities to pass her. She has touched the
lives of thousands of people with the many projects she has
organized. She is tireless when it comes to volunteering and giving
aid to others. What drives her? She said it best herself. "We hear
all the time how ‘it takes a whole village to raise a child'. How
about 'it takes but one child to change a village?" She has
demonstrated around the world, how youth can make positive change
happen time and time again. Each time her own efforts are a tribute
to the power in one dedicated person. She has excellent
prioritizing and organization skills, so that each project she
touches is completed, completed well, is a work of which to be
proud and that can be sustained over time.
Should you have a chance to meet Nickole, she will undoubtedly say
“nice to meet you”. And, when she says that to you, you can be
assured that you are in good company. Because of her openness to
venture and be productive, Nicole has said, “Nice to meet you”
already in her life to Nelson Mandela! Because of her peace efforts
she was included to in invitation-only event in Seattle, Washington.
She describes President Mandela as “the most peaceful person I’ve
ever met” and she says her goal is to have people say of her, as
they have of him, that she has made a big difference in their
world. She’s already met her goal for making a difference, but she
continues to move the bar for herself and others follow her example.
I believe any person who has the chance to meet and work with
Nickole Evans will benefit from that association. I support her
wholeheartedly in working toward her unwavering goal to learn as
much as she can about making a positive difference. Nickole is
committed to peace, and people and I hope we all can commit to her
by helping her with her goal of attending Western Washington
University. |
June 12, 2006 - Alan P Muia,
Director of Student Life , Skagit Valley College, Mt. Vernon, WA
I am pleased to write this letter
in support of Nickole Evans. During the time I’ve known her, I’ve
found Nickole to be a conscientious, intentional, and consistent
student leader. She is a talented and driven student who has made a
significant impact on the Skagit Valley College student body and the
college as a whole.
Nickole has made good use of her time at SVC. She has been a
resident assistant in the residence hall in which she lives; she
served as the president of the Associated Students of Skagit Valley
College; she has worked to raise money for the areas affected by the
December, 2005 tsunami and hurricanes Katrina and Rita; and arranged
for and coordinated the College’s first Books for Africa book
drives. Her organizational skills and ability to build consensus
with others make her an inspiring leader and motivator.
Nickole’s experiences as student body president and resident
assistant have stretched Nickole in new ways. She has learned a
great deal about resolving conflict, setting clear expectations of
others and herself, and celebrating accomplishments. While I never
had the privilege of working with Lori Rhett, I know from my
colleagues in the Washington State Council for Unions and Student
Programs that she was an outstanding and caring professional who
worked tirelessly for the benefit of her students. I see Nickole as
an outstanding and caring professional who works tirelessly for the
benefit of others.
In short, Nickole has been an exemplary student and leader at
Skagit Valley College and in our community. Please feel free to
contact me if you need more information about Nickole’s involvement
or if I can further assist in any way. |
June 13, 2006 - Joan Ruiz,
V.I.S.I.T.S. Coordinator, Mount Vernon Schools -
Ms. Evans has been a Reading
Tutor for the past two years at Centennial Elementary School where I
am the Coordinator of Volunteer Services.
Ms. Evans has been a wonderful role model for the students whom she
has tutored. Her caring personality and ability to make reading fun
for the students motivated them to do their best. Her ability to
evaluate a situation and find resolution for problems has been a
real asset to our program.
Ms. Evans showed her leadership skills by making herself available
to advise and give guidance to other college age students who were
new to tutoring at Centennial. When I would mention the need for
another reading or math tutor she would encourage students at the
college to fill the need.
Over the course of the two years that Ms. Evans was a tutor here
staff members requested that she tutor students from their class.
The facilitator of Centennial's reading program asked each quarter
if Nickole would be returning as she appreciated Ms. Evans positive
attitude and teaching abilities. |
January 7, 2005 - Debra Goodwin,
Acting Executive Director, Girl Scouts Mid-Columbia Council
Nickole has been a member of the Mid
Columbia Girl Scouts in Kennewick, Washington, Since 1991 at the age
of 6. Nickole is one of the most giving and caring young people I
know. by the end of Middle School, Nickole had completed her Silver
award, a web page called "Youth Speak Out". See
www.tcfn.org/jrsummit/inteam.html. Throughout Nickole's high
school years she donated over 200 hours a year volunteering, and was
extremely active in putting together programs to promote peace. You
can see much of her work at ww.y2kyouth.org and her personal story
at
www.y2kyouth.org/nickole. She participated yearly as a counselor
intern at camps, developed homework packets for Migrant Worker
children, and started local chapters of Student Against Violence
Everywhere (SAVE).
She received her Gold Award for girl Scouts in recycling computers
to low income girls. After graduating from High School, Nickole went
on to volunteer for a year for AmeriCorps NCCC in South Carolina.
She volunteered over 1800 hours tutoring to children, building
houses, trail blazing and laying an irrigation system in Florida.
During that time she also found additional volunteer opportunities
by locating Girl Scouts that needed help, assisted in an AIDS walk
and camp for children with AIDS, and a candle vigil for Cancer
victims.
Nickole started Skagit Valley College Fall of 2004 and there she
volunteered for Planned Parenthood, participated in getting the vote
out, and put together an on-line magazine showing young women
choices. With the advent of the Asian Tsunami Nickole is already
collecting supplies. |
January 17, 2005 -
Jenny Wieland, National SAVE Director,
MAVIA
Every year Mothers Against Violence
in America (MAVIA) is in a unique position. Working with hundreds of
students from Washington State and beyond who are earnestly trying
to make a difference in their schools and communities. It is rare,
however, for us to encounter such a dedicated and diligent young
person as Nickole Evans. So it is with enthusiasm that I submit this
letter of reference on Nickole's behalf.
I have known Nickole since August of 1999 when she founded the
Columbia Basin Chapter of Students Against Violence Everywhere
(SAVE). SAVE is a K-12 student-initiated, school-based and
after-school violence prevention program of MAVIA. She also
designed, organized, and implemented two SAVE Conferences which
brought together students from Eastern Washington and trained them
to be effective leaders for violence prevention in their schools and
communities. MAVIA also honored Nickole as the 1999 National
Peacemaker/High School Division.
It is evident that Nickole possesses remarkable communication skills for
her age and the confidence to implement the most creative ideas. In
addition, she has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in her
school, her community, and the greater world community. She
definitely has had a positive impact beyond all expectations. She
exemplifies the best and the brightest.
Because of her dedication to issues improving the quality of life
at school and in the community, I have always thought of Nickole as
the one women who will change the world. Her passion to our urgent
mission of preventing violence by and against young was one of the
reasons we made sure Nickole met Nelson Mandella when he came to
visit Seattle. Her compelling commitment to citizens service and her
talents as a leader who respects and values others will only grow
stronger and reach farther as she continues her life. |

June 2003 -
Annette Clark - CONTACT Tri-Cities.I
initially came to know Nickole Evans through her community service
projects. My first working experience with Nickole came after she
had received national recognition for her work with non-violence. I
asked her to speak at a workshop CONTACT hosted, and she graciously
accepted, working her talk in-between band practices at her school.
Like many people in
the Tri-City area, I was impressed by Nickole’s can-do attitude and
caring spirit, particularly for someone so young. Over the last
several years, I have watched Nickole mature into a beautiful young
woman. She radiates compassion, caring and dedication. I am
convinced she will remain committed to bettering the world
throughout her lifetime.
Nickole enrolled in
the CONTACT training for crisis line workers as soon as she reached
our minimum age of 15 years. During the 40+ hours of class, Nickole
was always engaged in the sessions; her insights added greatly to
our discussions and group work. After Nickole was commissioned as a
Teen Talk crisis line volunteer, she has spent many hours on the
phone line, assisting her peers in some very difficult situations.
In addition, she has supported our organization by presenting
information on the Teen Talk program to other agencies and clubs,
spent many hours preparing posters, marketing and recruiting, and
helping with fundraisers. She is committed and cooperative; her
actions and essence exude the true meaning of empathy. She has
earned the respect of her fellow volunteers, young and old, through
the content of her character.
Nickole has been a
wonderful asset to CONTACT Tri-Cities, to this community, and to our
nation. I recommend her without reservation. |
June 2003 - Charles E. Morgan,
Counselor, Kennewick High
Nickole Evans is an exceptionally
talented and dynamic young woman. She is an excellent student but
her real talent lies i the social domain. Nickole is quite unique in
that she has established and maintained her own web site dedicated
to ending violence in our country. She has received national
recognition for her effort. Additionally, she has spent a semester
in France as a foreign exchange student. While at Kennewick Nickole
has remained active in a variety of activities arranging from
leadership class to pear helpers. Her social conscientiousness is
way beyond her years and her interpersonal skills are top-notch. Her
efforts have earned her the respect of both teh faculty and her
peers. Nickole is one of those really special people who can really
sink her teeth into any project and energize it to completion. She
is a role model for responsibility as well as a wonderful decision
maker.
Nickole's personality is a combination of dynamic energy, effervescence
and humor. It's a wonderful mix that empowers her to be a highly
effective leader. Couple this with her goal-directedness and
commitment to excellence and you have the kind of person you are
seeking.
In summary, Nickole Evans is more than deserving of my highest and most
enthusiastic recommendation. she most certainly exemplifies the
"Right stuff".
