In commemoration of the International Day for Tolerance, the first annual Global Youth Peace & Tolerance Award was created to honor young people, ages 16 and under, who significantly contribute through creative expression to the pursuit of peace, tolerance and social justice.

The honorees were chosen from a group of nominees representing nations the world over. The best exemplify the spirit of the United Nations charter "to practice tolerance and live together in peace as good neighbors. "They further those virtues through their extraordinary creative talents and devotion to the spirit of tolerance and social justice. The award is divided into separate categories for performing arts, film and media, fine arts, literacy arts, science and technology, leadership, and social activism.
