1999 Global Peace and Tolerance Lifetime Achievement Awards
In commemoration of the International Day for Tolerance, the first annual Global Peace & Tolerance Lifetime Achievement Awards honors a unique group of people who have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to promoting tolerance among peoples.

The honorees are chosen by virtue of their immense accomplishments in the fields of Political Leadership, Classical Arts, Performing Arts, Cultural Arts, Science & Technology, Cultural Innovation, Children Advocacy, and a special designation, Peace Negotiations.

Each honoree best exemplifies the spirit of the United Nations charter, "to practice tolerance in peace as good neighbors." They enhance these virtues through their incredible innovation in a variety of world disciplines. The unifying aspect of their diverse accomplishments is a commitment to elevating the quality of life through their life's work, and conveying a sense of justice and goodwill whether saving lives or simply enriching them.

The Declaration of the Principles of Tolerance defines tolerance as "..respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human." With this criteria in mind each of our honorees sets a shining example of acceptance, compassion, and humanity that truly promotes and creates a more tolerant and peaceful world. It is our honor to celebrate the depth and diversity of all our honoree's immense accomplishments.

Mikhail Gorbachev

Lifetime Achievement Award for Political Leadership. "We need a  new system of values, a system of the organic unity between mankind and nature and the ethic of global responsibility."

For the first time since World War II, a generation of children is growing up without the fear of worldwide nuclear destruction. Mikhail Gorbachev will be forever honored for providing the courage and vision to help make that possible.

The humanitarian work  of Mikhail Gorbachev was exemplified in 1990 with his receipt of the Nobel Prize for Peace, awarded for his efforts in ending the Cold War. As President of the Soviet Union, he ended fifty years of nuclear brinkmanship between the two superpowers. In its place, he taught his country and the world  two new ideas: Glasnost (Freedom of speech) and Perestroika ( Positive Economic Reform). These revolutionary concepts led to the blossoming of freedom in Eastern Europe and the introduction of democracy to Russia.
